In October, Healthy Towns in South West Rocks held a clinical GP breakfast, hosted a Community Wellbeing Day at Horseshoe Bay and saw the launch of parkrun. Read on for a summary of the activities.
Horseshoe Bay Reserve parkrun
The Horseshoe Bay Reserve parkrun was a true community collaboration between the South West Rocks Sport & Recreation Committee, NCPHN Healthy Towns and the LHD Health Promotion team.
Parkrun is a weekly, 5km walk or run, which is free for anyone to take part. Parkrun in South West Rocks launched on 6th October with 144 runners and walkers taking part. The successful launch ran smoothly and efficiently thanks to the volunteers who helped organise, time keep, scan and marshal.
Community Wellbeing Day
On Wednesday 10th October to coincide with Mental Health Month and World Mental Health Day, Healthy Towns hosted a Community Wellbeing Day at Horseshoe Bay Reserve. A range of service providers from aged care, mental health, disability, and alcohol and other drugs came along to provide information and education.
The LHD’s health promotion team brought along fun games for kids and hosted a healthy cook off. The Lions Club cooked a delicious BBQ, while the South West Rocks Ukelele group entertained with some soothing tunes.
GP Consultation and My Emergency Dr Pilot
The Healthy Towns Community Survey, Consultations and Action Planning Workshops in South West Rocks identified a number of issues accessing GPs and specialist doctors. NCPHN and partners at the LHD met with local GPs to discuss some of the issues and initiatives flagged by the community. The GPs offered significant insight into the issues presented and helped to brainstorm some solutions.
We are investigating a number of potential initiatives to address GP access and are supporting the LHD to trial a pilot of the My Emergency Dr App. The app is available for download on a smart phone and provides access to Specialist Emergency Doctors 24 hours a day. Doctors can provide an online consultation, including prescriptions, xray and pathology referrals.
Whilst the app is free to download, patients wishing to use the app are required to obtain a referral from their GP prior to use.
