One in three people aged 65+ years fall every year. It is the leading cause of hospitalisation in older adults (41%) and costs an estimated $3.9 billion nationally each year*.
Many people believe falls ‘just happen’ as you get older, but falls are not an inevitable part of ageing. Fall risk is multifactorial and linked to changes in physical and sensory function, the use of certain medications, and medical conditions. Research shows that healthcare professionals are key to help reducing and preventing falls. This includes early assessment, encouraging patients to be physically active, ongoing management, referral, and increased dialogue on the topic.
