Healthy North Coast has an exciting training opportunity now available for practices in the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW to gain Advanced Life Support skills in the comfort of their own practice.
In order to reduce patient deterioration and poor outcomes for at-risk patients, GPs are at the front line of patient care to aid prevention and decrease response time in rapidly deteriorating patients prior to transition to critical care areas.
Many Advanced Life Support courses take place in metropolitan areas or are delivered with a high focus on hospital settings. Regional GPs and practice staff can be greatly out of pocket for course fees and travel expenses or simply left unskilled when it comes to ALS training in a general practice context.
Healthy North Coast has engaged Leanne Bryant, a certified Australian Resuscitation Council instructor and registered nurse specialising in emergency nursing, to deliver high quality Advanced Life Support 1 training for a fraction of the cost in the comfort of your own practice.
The training is accredited with RACGP as an accredited activity for 40 CPD points and is currently suitable for GP Registrars to complete their ALS fellowship requirements with RACGP through GP Synergy. With the end of the 2020–22 triennium quickly approaching, this is a great opportunity for practices to upskill their staff. The training is on Saturdays for up to 6 participants, including GPs and practice nurses who would like to further their basic life support skills or are looking to renew their existing ALS qualifications.
Participants will learn all aspects of advanced life support, including the causes and prevention of cardiac arrest and the ALS algorithm. They will also undertake practical skills components of ALS, including airway and breathing, assessment of DRSABC(D), compressions and defibrillation using an automated external defibrillator. There will be a simulation of ALS scenarios so participants can contextualise their newly learned skills and deepen the application. Leanne also takes the opportunity to review the practice equipment and onsite ALS resources for quality improvement and stock control.
Since starting in October 2021, 60 participants have now completed the training and the feedback has shown that it is an opportunity not to be missed.
Dr Anne Murray, a Port Macquarie GP said ‘it was the best ALS training I have ever completed and the trainer was excellent to say the least. Leanne flowed with us and worked the sessions well around our knowledge base. The training was at good pace and she gave helpful and non-judgemental feedback with each stage of the day. I greatly appreciated the opportunity to do this within our practice. Allowing us to run scenarios within our practice setting added an element to the training I had not experienced with other ALS courses. Definitely value added +++ and it supported learning for all practice staff.’
With a high demand for in situ and local ALS training, this opportunity will be extremely sought after, so we strongly encourage you to put in your expressions of interest to secure your preferred date as soon as possible.
