It is imperative that GPs and practice nurses maintain their skills and competency to perform advanced life support (ALS) procedures in general practice.
Despite geographical location or area of expertise, it is obligatory for all general practitioners and practice nurses to be skilled in taking the appropriate and responsible action on acute medical problems presented by a patient, including the resuscitation and management of acute presentations. *
Leanne Bryant is a certified Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) instructor and a local registered nurse specialising in emergency nursing. She has developed an in-situ ALS training opportunity, which can be delivered within your practice. The training is targeted to GPs and practice nurses who want to further their basic life support skills or renew their existing ALS qualifications.
“Was just awesome and very practical, fitted into the GP operation well, whilst not being confronting. Leanne’s approach to all of us was excellent and encouraging with education delivery. The application of the learning was great with the replicated scenarios…. This is a great education model for general practice. Well Done!” – Dr Murray Schofield, General Practitioner, Port Macquarie.

This offering from HNC substantially reduces the normal cost of ALS learning. In addition we provide the learning in-house to take account of your unique setting and the roles and relationships in the team in relation to ALS.
ALS workshop involves an in-depth didactic presentation on the causes and prevention methods of cardiac arrest and provides the resources of the ALS Algorithm for GPs to use as a tool to manage all adults who require advanced life support.
Discuss with the owner or principal to consider when an in-house training could work for the team and click on the expression of interest form below to request a workshop.
Learning Outcomes:
Participants will learn about advanced life support, including the causes and prevention of cardiac arrest and the ALS algorithm.
They will also undertake a practical skills component of ALS, including airway and breathing, assessment of DRSABC(D), compressions and defibrillation using an automated external defibrillator.
There will also be a simulation of ALS scenarios so participants are able to contextualise their newly learned skills and deepen their application.
The workshop also includes an opportunity for your practice to review your equipment and onsite ALS resources for the purpose of quality improvement and/or stock control. Visit PCI page, Improve preparation of emergency equipment to undertake a quality improvement initiative on auditing your emergency equipment.
