20 medical, nursing and allied health students from around NSW and ACT recently set off on a four-day Go Rural tour of the North Coast – a road trip designed to encourage future doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to consider the benefits and rewards of a regional health career.
The tour was the final of three Go Rural road trips for the year run by Rural Doctors Network, with funding from the Australian Government, to enable students to experience regional and rural GP practice and hospital tours.
As part of their tour, Dr Beth Allin (GP Advisor, Workforce Planning & Prioritisation Program at Healthy North Coast) hosted a barbecue at her property, including a treasure hunt.
For Dr Beth, it was great to connect on a personal level with these students in a relaxed setting:
‘It was fantastic to host such a great number of young clinicians and show them the advantages of living rurally. Some of them are seriously considering the North Coast for their future careers and it was exciting to discuss these plans with them.’
This exposure to our region is a wonderful opportunity to show students what a future career in primary health care on the North Coast might look like.
