Two North Coast healthcare workers have been nominated among eight finalists from NSW in the Stronger Medicare Awards, which recognise people who have made a significant contribution to Australia’s primary health care sector.
Casey Shorter, Macksville Medical Centre
Ms Shorter (main picture) has played a transformative role in reshaping the Macksville Medical Centre, taking it from a part-time solo GP practice to a thriving hub of regional health care.
Under her leadership, the centre has evolved into a model for accessible, community-driven care. The clinic now boasts a team of two general practitioners, two psychologists, audiologists, occupational therapists, and even legal services – offering comprehensive support to meet the complex needs of the community.
This development is especially significant for the region, which is home to vulnerable groups such as elderly, low-income families, and people experiencing unemployment.
Ms Shorter’s efforts have directly addressed the region’s critical shortage of primary healthcare services, providing essential and urgent care where it was previously lacking.
Beyond expanding access to care, the clinic has also become a key player in fostering the future of regional health care. Macksville Medical Centre now offers placements for students and has an active recruitment drive to attract doctors, ensuring a sustainable workforce for years to come.
Casey Shorter’s work is a powerful testament to what can be achieved through vision, collaboration, and a deep commitment to improving the health of regional communities. Her leadership continues to inspire and shape the future of primary care in the Mid North Coast and beyond.
