October is Mental Health Month and a trio of Clarence Valley service providers are dangling some enticing prizes in a fishing competition for local residents.
headspace Grafton, the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program and Bulgarr Ngaru Medical Service have combined to host the 2020 Mental Health Month Flathead Fishing Competition.
There are first, second and third prizes of a $300, $200 and $100 voucher. These are redeemable at either Grafton Firearms & Fishing Tackle or Yamba Bait & Tackle.
headspace community engagement officer Mark McGrath says that getting outside for a fishing experience can be restorative and good for your mental health.
Mr McGrath says that by reconnecting with nature, you become more mindful and present in the moment, helping you to unplug from the daily data storm and improve your mental wellbeing.
“With COVID-19 it was difficult to come up with something to celebrate the month, but so far there’s been a great response,” he says.
The competition winners will be determined by the length of the fish, photographed alongside a measuring mat or ruler. Catch and release is encouraged. Fish must be hooked on either bait or lure; netting is not permitted.
The 2020 Mental Health Month Flathead Fishing Competition is open to everyone living in the Clarence Valley. Participants need to have a valid NSW fishing licence or meet the NSW fishing licence fee exemption criteria.
The competition runs until 30 October.
