A systematic review of 10 trials involving nearly 78,000 people has demonstrated that marine omega-3 fatty acids had no significant association with fatal or non-fatal coronary heart disease or any major vascular events.
The study results were published in JAMA Cardiol online on January 31, 2018.
This meta-analysis included randomised trials involving at least 500 participants with a mean entry age of 64. The mean treatment duration of the trials was 4.4 years and the studies had to assess the associations of omega-3 fatty acids with the risk of vascular events.
The results provide no support for current recommendations to use omega-3 fatty acid supplements for the prevention of fatal coronary heart disease or any cardiovascular disease in people who have or are at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
