In support of April Falls Month, Healthy North Coast has launched a new Primary Care Impact initiative to improve falls awareness and response in general practice.
One in three people aged 65 and over fall every year. It is the leading cause of hospitalisation in older adults (41%) and costs an estimated $3.9 billion nationally each year.
April Falls Month is an annual campaign by NSW Fall Prevention and Healthy Ageing Network to raise awareness about the impact of falls and promote best practise fall prevention strategies.
Research shows that health care professionals are key to helping reduce and prevent falls. This includes early assessment, encouraging patients to be physically active, ongoing management, referral, and increased dialogue on the topic.
In support of April Falls Month and ongoing fall prevention, Primary Care Impact has launched a new quality improvement initiative, Embed falls screening and prevention into general practice. The page includes risk assessment screening tools, provider and patient resources, and strategies for running your own Falls Month campaign.
