With the establishment of a new hub for specialist menopause services at John Hunter Hospital in the Hunter New England Local Health District, North Coast clinicians have an opportunity to shape service delivery and funding priorities.
The project team is seeking feedback from GPs on how the service can best support them and their patients, and where they feel funding should be directed to improve local services.
The new hub is part of the NSW Government commitment of $40.3 million over four years (2022-23 to 2025-26) to establish up to 16 new services for women experiencing severe menopause symptoms.
Based on a ‘hub and spoke’ model of care, each specialist menopause service will have a coordinator and escalation pathways for patients with complex menopause symptoms. The Northern NSW and Mid North Coast Local Health Districts will have menopause services as points of escalation from existing primary care.
The services will provide expert advice and support for women about:
- managing severe and complex symptoms of menopause
- bone health for the management of osteoporosis and to prevent fractures
- lowering the cardiovascular disease and stroke
- supporting mental health and wellbeing
- managing weight and lifestyle
- managing urinary problems.
The funding will support an education and awareness campaign focusing on severe perimenopause and menopause symptoms, and a statewide clinical group to lead the implementation of these new services.
