Healthy North Coast has announced RSL LifeCare as a successful recipient under the Community Wellbeing and Resilience (CWR) program, which commenced in 2024 and will run over the next 12 months. Delivery of RSL LifeCare’s Stronger Together intergenerational program has commenced in Port Macquarie, with additional Northern NSW locations to follow.
The CWR program is investing $1 million in locally led initiatives that strengthen connection, reduce isolation and build resilience across the region. In this round, RSL LifeCare joins Plan C and The Returning, delivering practical, place-based activities with schools, community organisations and older residents.
“Building community resilience is fundamental to improving health and wellbeing outcomes,” said Monika Wheeler, CEO, Healthy North Coast.
“Our region has felt the impacts of significant events in recent years, and programs like these strengthen local relationships, confidence and preparedness.”
Programs being delivered
RSL LifeCare is a community organisation delivering aged care, retirement living and veteran wellbeing services across NSW and the ACT. Through their program ‘Stronger Together’, RSL LifeCare will partner with local schools, businesses and retirement living communities to foster meaningful connections between young people and older residents. Run as small weekly group sessions the program will encourage shared skills, storytelling and community participation to help reduce loneliness and build confidence. Stronger Together has started in Port Macquarie, with additional Northern NSW locations to follow.
“We’re proud to contribute to building community resilience through our Stronger Together intergenerational program. By connecting seniors and teenagers in meaningful ways, we’re not only reducing isolation but also strengthening local relationships, wellbeing, and empathy while improving participants confidence,” said Michael Wappett, General Manager, Retirement Living, RSL LifeCare.
The Returning is a First Nations–led organisation centred on culture, healing and connection to Country. Recent program delivery includes a Women’s Gathering and two Elders’ Health Retreats. The program continues to support cultural connection, social and emotional wellbeing, and intergenerational healing, with evaluation and future delivery planning underway.
Plan C builds local disaster resilience by training and mentoring volunteer Community Carers & Responders (CCRs). To date, 101 participants have attended workshops across Northern NSW. Delivery is place-based and adapting to community needs, with strong engagement. With recent weather events in the Mid Coast Plan C are expanding their program to cover Grafton and Coffs Harbour in 2026.
About the CWR program
Since 2022, the CWR program has funded 26 community wellbeing and resilience initiatives, valued at more than $6.3 million, helping North Coast communities recover from the health and wellbeing impacts of natural disasters and build capacity to respond to future events.
In this round, Healthy North Coast also trialled Participatory Grant-Making (PGM) — bringing shortlisted applicants together to review proposals, collaborate and contribute to funding decisions.
The 2024 CWR program is supported through the Primary Health Network Program, an initiative of the Australian Government.
