General practices often play a central role in the provision of healthcare to communities in the immediate, acute phase of emergency situations, and on an ongoing basis for the long-term recovery of individuals and their broader community. Challenging times, such as a natural disaster or pandemic, may understandably cause increased stress and anxiety. It is therefore important that general practice maintain wellbeing within the team to ensure high quality communication and empathy for other team members and for consumers.
Staying safe and healthy is essential for all healthcare workers including GPs, practice nurses, support staff, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers. It is important to be aware of the early signs of stress and its negative impact on communication and empathy.
This quality improvement topic focuses on self-care strategies, and compassionate communication skills for the team and patients.
Improve staff self-care and compassionate communication strategies.
Healthcare staff report an increase in the capacity to communicate well and maintain a positive sense of wellbeing. See sample staff survey as an example measure or use the free online mental health survey by the Black Dog Institute.
