The Weight Management in Adults HealthPathway has been updated to reflect current evidence, national policy, and local service arrangements.
This pathway has been localised for our region and developed in conjunction with local endocrinologists, general physicians and allied health clinicians. It places stronger emphasis on the complex biological, psychological, social and environmental determinants of weight.
The content aligns with the National Obesity Strategy, recognising that weight management is not solely about BMI, but also about health behaviours, metabolic risk and quality of life.
Access the updated Weight Management in Adults pathway now.
Key updates include:
1. A broader clinical lens
- Expanded scope to include management recommendations for patients who are underweight or in the healthy weight range, in addition to those living with overweight or obesity.
- Greater emphasis on the multifactorial determinants of weight and overall health.
- Practical guidance on reducing weight stigma in consultations.
- Addition of HANDI resources to support evidence-based non-pharmacological interventions, alongside links to the Healthy Lifestyle Support page for structured behavioural and lifestyle care.
2. Updated pharmacotherapy guidance
- GLP-1 receptor agonist information updated in line with current guidance, prescribing considerations and availability.
- Clearer positioning of pharmacotherapy within a comprehensive, long-term management framework.
3. Clarified referral pathways
- Referral criteria refined.
- Local bariatric service access clarified, with links to the Bariatric Surgery Assessment service page to support appropriate referral.
The intent of this update is to support structured, patient-centred weight management in general practice, across the full clinical spectrum.
