Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is under-diagnosed in primary care, especially in people with hypertension. Often referred to as a ‘silent disease’, there can be no warning signs. It’s not uncommon for people to lose up to 90% of their kidney function before getting any symptoms.
Early detection of kidney disease is a top priority. Evidence shows that detection rates double when high risk people are picked up in the primary care environment.
‘Chronic kidney disease has become a significant part of a primary healthcare professional’s workload,’ said Kylie Wyndham, a nurse practitioner employed by the Northern NSW Local Health District to educate and treat early-stage CKD in the Tweed/Byron area.
‘This is particularly true for Aboriginal health workers and GPs.’
Together with Noell Burgess, Aboriginal Health Coordinator at Healthy North Coast, Kylie will facilitate these education sessions.

For practice nurses looking to improve identification and management of chronic kidney disease, the EPIK Research program will be rolling out a 6-part webinar series in January 2022. Every month for six months, join a one-hour live webinar to explore early identification and management of CKD in general practice.
