Vaping has become increasingly popular, particularly among youth and young adults.
While long-term health effects are unclear, we know that short-term harm associated with vaping is widely occurring, with many misconceptions that vaping is harmless.
Known risks of vaping are emerging, with NSW Health advising that vaping can cause the following:
- Lung damage
- Breathlessness
- Nicotine addiction
- Vapes can explode and cause severe burns
- Nicotine poisoning
- Vapes contain hundreds of toxic chemicals, including those that can cause cancer and heart disease.
What’s happening on the North Coast:
The North Coast Youth Vaping Taskforce has conducted numerous initiatives, including:
- Launching the Online Youth Vaping Hub, which has evidence-based resources, training and support
- Holding community forums, school consultations and parent surveys to inform the development of the North Coast Youth Vaping Action Plan
- Partnering with the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) to support evaluation of the Taskforce and their key initiatives.
About the North Coast Youth Vaping Taskforce
In mid-2022, Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) Health Promotion partnered with North Coast Population and Public Health and Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) Health Promotion to take a coordinated and community-informed approach to initiate action to protect young people from the harms of e-cigarettes.
The Taskforce aims to protect young people under 18 years of age on the NSW Mid and North Coast from the harms of e-cigarettes.
