Following the devastating Northern Rivers floods of 2022, Healthy North Coast has been working, alongside our community, to support both individuals, health care providers and local community organisations in their recovery, resilience, and preparedness for future climate disasters.
We know that extreme weather events will continue to challenge our health system and communities due to our changing climate. Proactive disaster planning and longer-term recovery investment is more critical than ever, ensuring that primary health care providers and community organisations are equipped to respond effectively when crises occur.
We’ve now finalised our Primary Care Flood Reflections report, which captures key insights from the flood response and the role of primary health care in disaster recovery.
The report highlights some of the resilience programs we have launched for the community and primary care sector over the past 3 years, including:
- Resilient Kids
- Safe Havens
- The Community Wellbeing and Resilience program
- The Workforce Support and Wellbeing program
- + more
The report also includes 10 key recommendations, which we have shared with the NSW and Australian governments. These recommendations are informed by our experience delivering the Primary Health Network program and our collaboration with community organisations, general practices, community pharmacies, mental health providers, Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services, Local Health Districts, and other response agencies.
Thanks to more than $40 million in recovery funding, we have been able to commission essential health services across Northern NSW. Our reflections have also shaped our own disaster preparedness planning, ensuring primary health care is better integrated into future emergency responses.
We’re proud to now be included in the Regional Emergency Management Committee and to be working closely with Local Health Districts under a new Memorandum of Understanding. Together, we’re strengthening disaster management efforts to ensure that health care is not only part of the response but also embedded in the planning and preparation stages.
By sharing these insights, we hope to raise awareness about the vital role of primary health care in disaster management and the need for formal recognition and funding at every stage.
