Carbon monoxide monitoring in pregnancy
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that you can’t see, taste or smell. It is produced from burning fuels like gas, wood and charcoal, even if there is no smoke.
Carbon monoxide poisoning can affect anyone. People at higher risk include pregnant women and their unborn babies. In NSW carbon monoxide monitoring is offered to all pregnant women at their first visit and at 28 weeks.
If you are a smoker, or have quit in the last 12 months, carbon monoxide monitoring will be offered at every health visit.
Please see a short video on carbon monoxide monitoring for more information.
Myths and facts when smoking in pregnancy
There is also a helpful video produced by Illawarra Shoalhaven LHD that dispels some myths about smoking and quitting when pregnant.
