Children under 10 who display problematic or harmful sexual behaviours (PHSB) require timely, compassionate and developmentally informed support.
In response to national recommendations and emerging evidence, the Safe Wayz program is now operating across the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD), helping families and services navigate concerns with accuracy, cultural safety, and hope.
Safe Wayz sits within in the Sexual Assault Service and provides a trauma informed, child centred response, and builds capacity across Health, Education, and a variety of community settings.
The initiative represents a major shift toward consistent, coordinated care for children and families – long recognised as a significant service gap across NSW.
A culturally safe approach
The program acknowledges the enduring impacts of colonisation and the ongoing experiences of racism faced by Aboriginal people.
Safe Wayz prioritises:
- respectful and inclusive engagement
- community partnerships grounded in trust and cultural knowledge.
Children are viewed as children first and foremost. Their behaviours are understood within a developmental, relational, and contextual lens – not through adult, criminal or shaming language. All children are treated with dignity and respect, with parents and carers an essential partner in all planning and interventions.
The Safe Wayz Clinical Coordinator works across MNCLHD to:
- provide consultation, intake assessment, and treatment planning.
- capacity build with key partners, including Sexual Assault Service, Child Protection Counselling Service, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Child & Family Teams, Aboriginal Family Health Workers
- strengthen interagency pathways and promote consistent, proportionate responses
- support culturally responsive practice in every interaction
- deliver early intervention to prevent escalation and reduce long term harm.
Early responders – GPs, teachers, clinicians, support workers and health staff – play a crucial role in noticing concerns early, asking the right questions and seeking timely advice. Safe Wayz provides the consultation and support they need to respond safely and confidently.
A message of hope
There is strong evidence that early, tailored support works. When children receive the right interventions at the right time, harmful behaviours are far less likely to escalate, and families can move forward with confidence and understanding.
Safe Wayz operates from an understanding that children have the capacity to develop healthy, respectful relationships when provided with appropriate support.
By strengthening early responses, improving pathways and building capacity across the system, MNCLHD is contributing to a safer future for all children.
