Did you know the average person spends 28 years of their life asleep?
That might sound like a lot, but it’s better than the alternative. Sleep deficiency adversely affects alertness, cognition, productivity, safety, learning and mood. It can also lead to poor metabolic, cardiovascular and mental health outcomes, along with premature death.
Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is one of the most common sleep disorders. Studies using sleep recording show that OSA affects about 25% of adult males and 10% of adult females. Most affected individuals do not complain of daytime dizziness. Severe OSA can increase the risk of mortality, stroke and cardiovascular disease in middle aged populations.
HealthPathways has recently published an Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Pathway for Adults. The pathway has useful links to screening tools such as Epworth Sleepiness Questionnaire and STOP-Bang questionnaire. The pathway also provides information on investigations and management including CPAP, links to ENABLE for those patients requiring Commonwealth assistance for CPAP therapy and also links to “Assessing Fitness to drive” for patients with OSA.
