OzGREEN’s ‘Resilient Communities’ is an empowering program bringing communities together to take action, develop disaster preparedness and create more sustainable and resilient homes and lifestyles.
As part of the program, OzGREEN will host two community landscape preparedness days – at Kyogle from 9:30am – 4:00pm on Saturday, 12 November and at Evans Head on Sunday, 13 November from 9:30am – 3:30pm.
OzGREEN’s Resilient Communities coordinator, Bruce Naylor, said each day would feature a free community lunch provided by the Twisted Tucker team.
The full-day workshops, which are funded by Healthy North Coast through the North Coast PHN program, include:
- visioning and planning for what’s ahead, and how communities can act to be prepared
- tours of nearby properties or information sessions from key speakers.
Bundjalung Elders Uncle Andrew Johnson and Aunty Kali Brooks will hold a cultural burn workshop at Kyogle, talking about the meaning of Country, along with cool burning techniques and practises.
There will be a ‘walk and talk’ section on culture and Country on the Evans Headland with Bandjalang Elder Simone Barker.
River health specialist Sue Lennox will explore the Evans River, paddling downstream through the Bundjalung National Park. Participants can explore and observe the ecology of the river, talk about river health and take water samples in a citizen health project to measure water quality.
At Kyogle, Gardening experts Elissa McAuliffe and Tony Brown of Brownie’s Biodynamics will explain how to create a garden bed with whatever you have at hand.
At Evans Head, you’ll learn how to make weed teas that literally turn noxious weeds into pure gold – bio-inoculants to enrich your soil.
