Polio may no longer be on our shores, but thousands of Australians are still experiencing the long-lasting impact of this devastating disease.
Australia was officially declared polio-free in 2000, but the effects of this disease continue to be felt by survivors, who can experience life-changing symptoms decades later.
Despite many people being unaware this can occur – even survivors themselves – the late effects of polio can have a devastating impact on a person’s mobility, independence, and quality of life.
Symptoms can include increased fatigue, muscle weakness, joint pain, increased sensitivity to cold, difficulties with swallowing and sleeping, and adverse reactions to anaesthesia.
Unfortunately, as this condition is not widely known, many people do not receive the care and support they need, with their symptoms often incorrectly diagnosed as signs of ageing.
Polio Australia and Spinal Life Australia are calling on all health professionals to learn about late effects of polio by booking a Polio Australia training workshop, to improve care and support for polio survivors – and not dismiss symptoms as simply signs of ageing.
These workshops are available Australia-wide and can be booked in person or via Zoom.
