A message from NSW Health, dated 17 March 2026.
Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is now endemic in areas west of the Great Dividing Range and north-east NSW.
On the North Coast, we now have 6 LGAs in our footprint that are high risk for JEV – Ballina, Byron, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed.
Two people have acquired JEV in NSW this mosquito season, and there have been ongoing detections of JEV in animals. It is important for people travelling to high risk LGAs for outdoor recreation to be aware of JEV risk and be offered vaccination as soon as possible prior to travel to affected areas.
Information for vaccine providers:
- Offer and recommend a free JEV vaccine to people who are eligible to receive it
- The JEV vaccine is available for free for people aged 2 months and older who:
- live and work (including volunteer work) in any of the high risk LGAs
- are travelling to any of the high risk LGAs
- Eligibility has been expanded until the start of winter – includes anyone who plans to visit a high risk region for outdoor activities such as camping, caravanning, boating, fishing.
For more information, including complete eligibility criteria and a list of all LGAs at high risk of JEV, visit NSW Health’s website.
There is also guidance for JEV on HealthPathways mosquito-borne diseases page.
