In late August, the Local Advisory Group met to support the planning and implementation of Healthy Towns initiatives in Casino.
During this meeting the group endorsed a number of activities around diet and exercise, mental health, transport, youth and reconciliation. Continue reading for an update of how the program is progressing.
March Against Violence
On Thursday 8 November, over 100 people came out to participate in a march against violence in Casino. The march was led by a group of high-schoolers proudly carrying a hand-painted banner and was well-attended by both community members and service providers.
Following the march, there was a coffee van on hand to serve up warm coffees and a sausage sizzle. Community members were able to grab a BBQ lunch and browse the information stalls, including Healthy Towns.
The event was organised by CASPA, Social Futures and Mid Richmond Neighbourhood Centre to help bring an end to family violence.
Free Gym Equipment Classes
To celebrate the brand new outdoor exercise equipment in Crawford Square, we’ve partnered with the LHD to provide a “come and try” program.
The program will consist of 4 classes, run over 4 weeks and are open to residents of all ages and abilities. The classes commence Monday 19th November from 10:30am-11:30am and will run for the next 3 consecutive Mondays.

Parkrun
During consultations with the community, council and Local Health District (LHD), it was indicated the town would benefit from a local parkrun. Parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5km walk or run that is run by volunteers in the local community and open to everyone.
We are currently exploring the options and steps needed to establish a parkrun in Casino. A walk-through of the prospective course is planned for early December.
Mental Health First Aid Training
Mental Health First Aid Training for Casino community members is coming up in December 2018 and February 2019.
