The Therapeutic Goods Administration has announced that medicines containing codeine will become prescription only products from 1 February 2018.
One area that is likely to feel the impact of this change is the Kempsey-Nambucca region. This area was ranked 8th highest for opioid prescriptions dispensed in Australia in 2013[1].
While the full impact of change is not yet known, it is clear that the impact will be greater for some communities. Between now and the commencement of the change, is the time to assist primary health care providers to support affected community members. Supporting a plan now, can assist the community to make a successful transition away from codeine products.
There will be two task force meetings held to discuss and plan local actions:
Nambucca Heads, 30 November 2017, 6pm- 8:30pm
Kempsey, 29 November 2017, 7am – 8:45am
