Gentlemen of Kingscliff and Lennox Head, if you’ve ever wanted to discover the buzz of surfing, your chance has arrived.
The Waves of Wellness and Movember foundations have partnered up to offer six weeks of free learn-to-surf lessons for men aged 16 and up.
The lessons will be held at Kingscliff Beach, Kingscliff from Thursday 22 October, and Seven Mile Beach, Lennox Head from Wednesday 28 October. Kingscliff lessons are from 7am to 8:30am, while Lennox starts at 6:30am and runs through to 8am.
Alex Harmon from Waves of Wellness says the six-week Sand ’n’ Surf program aims to connect men from all walks of life using surfing and the ocean. It pairs weekly wellness discussions with learn-to-surf lessons.
Ms Harmon says the saltwater therapy sessions are designed to help those experiencing mental ill-health. The sessions facilitate functional recovery while promoting social inclusion, engagement and better quality of life.
The program’s main focus is to introduce surfing to participants as a way to improve physical health, mental health and wellbeing in a neutral, non-intrusive environment.
“We call it health by stealth,” she says. “It’s a chance to get men to sit down and talk about how they’re feeling, which is something they often don’t do. Surfing produces feelings of happiness and pure joy that can be sustained for the whole day.”
You don’t need your own wetsuit or surfboard to participate, but you do need to be able to swim 50 metres and be fit enough for a 30-minute surf session. If you already know how to surf, you can still sign up and lend a hand as a mentor.
You can also register your interest for future programs to be held at Turners Beach, Yamba.
