Residential aged care homes across the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW are invited to express interest in a new ‘train-the-trainer’ program focused on telehealth and clinical decision-making.
Developed in partnership between Healthy North Coast and the University Centre for Rural Health, the program supports educators and clinical leaders to build capability within their own homes.
From simulation to practice
This program equips educators and clinical leaders with the skills to teach, coach, and embed telehealth and structured communication tools that strengthen care across their teams, with a focus on adapting teaching strategies to support staff with varying levels of experience and confidence
Participants will be supported to deliver education on:
- effective use of telehealth, including mobile cart systems, to support timely care
- structured communication and escalation tools such as ISBAR and Healthy North Coast’s Deteriorating Resident Triage Tool (DRTT)
- clinical decision-making in deteriorating resident scenarios
The program also integrates key non-technical skills (communication, human factors, crisis resource management, and debriefing) supporting educators to guide staff not only what to do, but how to think and respond in complex situations.
By supporting educators and clinical leaders to deliver training within their own homes, the program aims to strengthen staff capability and support:
- earlier recognition and response to clinical deterioration
- increased confidence in using telehealth to access timely care
- improved communication and escalation within teams and with external providers.
Telehealth in practice
A recent use case demonstrates how telehealth supports a hybrid model of care between Residential Aged Care Homes and GPs, enabling timely clinical input and supporting care in place.
