Hundreds of locals turned out for the recent Healthy Towns community events in Lake Cathie, South West Rocks, Woolgoolga and Maclean. These events were organised by North Coast Primary Health Network (NCPHN) and the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAHMP).
These fun days offered community members a chance to learn more about local health and wellbeing services.
In Lake Cathie, Rural Fire Brigade members went head to head in a healthy food cook-off. The Mid North Coast Local Health District used pedal-power to make delicious banana smoothies. A ukulele band entertained the crowds while volunteers from the RFS served up 200 healthy sliders to the community.
South West Rocks turned on the sunshine for a beautiful morning at Horseshoe Bay Reserve. Tunes by the South West Rocks Ukulele Group and a delicious BBQ cooked by the Lions Club were on offer. Go4Fun hoola hoops and games kept kids entertained, and the winning team in the Koori cook-off stole first prize with a tasty kangaroo curry.
Wet weather couldn’t dampen the community spirit in Woolgoolga. Locals showed up early for yoga, a healthy pancake breakfast and cooking demonstrations. The event was a collaboration with Fluro Friday Woopi, a weekly community get-together aiming to raise awareness for mental health.
More than 200 community members came along to McLachlan Park in Maclean. The relaxed atmosphere along the Clarence River set the scene for a day of learning and sharing. There was information on hand for all life stages, from birth to aged care. Maclean TAFE kept things interactive with a pair of virtual reality goggles to try. Community health staff provided free blood pressure checks while the Maclean CWA upheld their reputation for the best preserves and jams. In true Maclean spirit, the entertainment came with a touch of Scottish flair – Alistair Wallace delighted the crowd by playing his bagpipe over the lunch break.
During NCPHN’s Healthy Towns consultations, community members requested more information on local services. These events evolved from that feedback, and were an enjoyable way to find out what’s available and where to go for help.
Stay tuned for more local activities in the coming months.
