Coffs Harbour’s Dr Austin May has established the North Coast’s first pacemaker implantation service.
Dr May is an interventional cardiologist and cardiac devices specialist. He grew up in Coffs Harbour and has recently returned to the area.
He will be implanting pacemakers and defibrillators, as well as performing coronary stent procedures, at Baringa Private Hospital.
“I’m very grateful to Baringa for providing a new theatre with pacemaker and stent facilities,” Dr May said. “All four international device companies – Medtronic, Biotronik, Boston Scientific and Abbott – are supporting the Coffs Harbour pacemaker program.”
Dr May completed medical training at the University of NSW (UNSW), graduating with honours in 2010. His studies included time spent at the Coffs Harbour Campus of UNSW’s Rural Clinical School.
He underwent specialty training in cardiology at Gosford and St Vincent’s hospitals, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians in 2017. Dr May then undertook two years of postgraduate sub-specialty training at John Hunter Hospital to achieve his current qualifications.
He is hoping his services will make life a little easier for local patients. Particularly the elderly, who presently have to travel long distances for their treatment.
“I’m keen to give back to the community where I grew up,” Dr May said. “There are great opportunities here and I want to provide my children with the same opportunities I had.”
Dr May’s practice is located at Suite 211, the Specialist Medical Centre, 343 Pacific Highway, Coffs Harbour.
