There are changes to the Admission/Discharge Notification (ADN) service in the both the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW Local Health Districts, effective from 1 July 2025.
The changes for Mid North Coast LHD:
The ADN service is now updated with new supporting software from eHealth and refined hospital event criteria. Notifications will now be sent for specific hospital admissions and discharges, including:
- Inpatient admissions for cardiology, general surgery, gynaecology, obstetrics, orthopaedics, paediatrics, renal medicine and psychiatry
- High-risk discharges that do not generate a discharge summary such as discharges against medical advice, patients who did not wait, and those who left at their own risk
- All death-related discharges
The changes for Northern NSW LHD:
NNSWLHD has switched their ADN service over to a more scalable solution built by eHealth NSW, but localised to the needs of NNSW GPs.
ADNs are changing in 3 ways:
- Which patients have ADNs turned on. The new service applies for all patients automatically and does not need to be switched on for each patient: unlike the prior service, which needed GPs to request ADNs be turned on for each patient.
- Which hospital visits generate ADNs. The new service generates ADNs when a patient admission/discharge meets one of the following scenarios. These scenarios have been designed in consultation with NNSW GPs:
Admissions
-
- Admission to an inpatient setting via ED or Outpatients (targetting unplanned admissions).
- Direct admission to Psychiatry specialty.
- Transfer to Mental Health ward from within
the hospital.
Discharges
Dicharge Notifications are targeted at risky or atypical discharges as well as some transfers, Normal discharges will not generate a discharge
notification. Only discharges with a discharge status from the
list below will generate a discharge notification:
-
- Did not wait
- Discharge against medical advice
- Discharge own risk/left at own risk
- Deceased
- Transfer to other hospital or to psychiatric hospital

Impact on your practice
These updates will be implemented automatically, requiring no action from your practice. Due to the refined notification criteria, we expect a reduction in the number of ADN notifications you will receive.
If you have any questions about ADNs, contact please reach out to your Regional Manager, who will be able to provide you with the relevant LHD contact.
