Our region is home to more unpaid carers than anywhere else in New South Wales, and ranks 5th nationally for the highest number of unpaid carers per capita.
This reflects a growing need for support with activities of daily living. In 2021, 75 out of every 1,000 North Coast residents required assistance, well above the NSW and national averages of 58 per 1,000.
To help address this need, Healthy North Coast has received a $400k grant as part of the NSW Department of Community and Justice’s Carers Investment Grant Program 2025-2027.
This initiative will support health professionals in better identifying and assisting unpaid and hidden carers across our communities.
Celebrating National Carers Week
National Carers Week, held from 12–18 October 2025, was a time to recognise and celebrate the vital role carers play in our health system and communities.
On Thursday 16 October, the HNC Carers Grant team joined the Port Macquarie Neighbourhood Service Centre’s carers lunch.

The team hosted some fun rounds of bingo, and the afternoon was a heartwarming event filled with gratitude and connection. Carers had a chance to relax and share some of their stories.
