As young people navigate the complexities of adolescence, they face a variety of challenges that can affect their social, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
One of the most pressing issues is substance use, including alcohol and other drugs. At this crucial stage of development, youth are at a higher risk of developing harmful patterns of use the earlier the exposure to substance use occurs.
It is difficult for people to reach out for help, especially the first time. They may have feelings of shame or guilt, anxious about being judged, stigma, worried about being found out, and this can delay people seeking assistance.
The Mid North Coast Local Health District now has drug and alcohol services tailored specifically for youth (12 years and above) and for people looking at getting help for the first time. This team are available to provide the help, support, and resources they need. These services offer a safe space for all individuals to talk openly about their concerns and work towards the person’s goals which may include, health education, reducing their substance use or in some cases stopping their use fully.
Why are these services different?
- Early intervention: The earlier that drug or alcohol use is addressed, the more likely long-term consequences are reduced. Services geared towards youth and new to treatment provide early intervention to identify potential issues before they escalate, reduce waiting for appointments, and provide the type of support people want.
- Flexible approaches: These programs understand the individual circumstances people face when they are first seeking help. By reducing barriers like flexible locations and times to meet, it is easier for people to talk about their concerns and discuss their options for treatment.
- Confidentiality and support: Mid North Coast Drug and Alcohol Service provides a safe and confidential space for people to talk about their concerns, get helpful information and find out about treatment options. A range of treatment and support services are offered for people concerned about alcohol, prescription, or other drug use, and/or for their families and carers. All MNCLHD Drug and Alcohol services are free, confidential and non-judgmental.
What can Drug and Alcohol Services provide?
- Counselling: Counselling provides a supportive, safe and confidential environment in which people can discuss their alcohol or other drug use issues and concerns with a professional. Counsellors can offer support and strategies to help people make changes to take back control.
- Support workshops: There are a number of SMART (Self-Management and Recovery Training) groups that are run across the Mid North Coast. These groups are for people living with substances use, providing support, skills and strategies to manage their substance use. There are also SMART groups specific for families, friends and varers who are impacted or concerned by a loved one’s substance use, and a YARN SMART group for supporting First Nations people impacted by substance use.
- Family support: Substance use doesn’t just affect the individual; it impacts families too. Drug and Alcohol Services provide support and information for people concerned about a loved one’s substance use.
