Improve checks on patient vaccination status when delivering influenza and COVID-19 vaccines

This is a More Involved QI – includes free access to Medicoach

The preferred minimum interval between a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and the influenza vaccine is 14 days. There is no requirement regarding the order in which doses are received.

To comply with the vaccine schedule, immunisation providers will need to adapt their usual procedures and practices to ensure a patient’s vaccine status is checked on the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) before proceeding.

Please Note: Each vaccine encounter must also be uploaded into the AIR at the time of administration.

Goal

Improve checks on patient vaccine status to ensure a 14 day gap between vaccinations.

Measure

Vaccination status is checked on 100% of patients prior to receiving influenza vaccine to ensure a 14-day gap between vaccinations.

Starting point
Possible improvement ideas
  • Allocate role and responsibility for checking vaccination status.
  • Include “check vaccination status” on day of vaccination checklist/s.
  • Sufficient staff have access to the AIR and know how to check vaccination status.
  • Prominently display the contact details of your local Public Health Unit, 1300 066 055 (NSW) in case staff need to report a suspected AEFI.
