GPs and GP registrars can top up their knowledge of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, at an RACGP accredited sexual health CPD webinar next month.
This is an opportunity to enhance your communication skills when taking a patient’s sexual health history. You’ll also better understand how people with STIs and HIV can feel stigmatised and discriminated against.
Hosted by Healthy North Coast on 14 September from 7pm-9pm, the webinar will cover:
- the impact that syphilis and antimicrobial resistant gonorrhoea are having on our local and wider community and the ways in which we can minimise the risk of these STIs and blood-borne viruses
- what resources are at our disposal to help with contact tracing and following best practice guidelines when managing STIs and BBVs
- use of pre-exposure prophylaxis in general practice and its effective minimisation of HIV transmission.
One of the speakers on the evening, Dr Kym Collins, said it was important to destigmatise STIs and HIV and to demystify them.
‘There’s still so much misinformation out there,’ Dr Collins said. ‘The idea at this point is to support primary care in conjunction with allied health services and keep that part of our lives healthy on the North Coast.’
By attending this webinar you will be able to:
- explain to patients the behaviours that increase the risk of contracting STIs and BBVs
- appraise the impact of syphilis and antimicrobial resistant gonorrhoea on the local community and apply effective practice procedures as per the Australian STI Management Guidelines
- access digital resources to support GPs in providing sexual health care
- use PrEP in general practice.
Speakers on the evening include:
- Dr Kym Collins, Staff Specialist HIV and Sexual Health
- Dr Natalie Edmiston, Staff Specialist Sexual Health
- Dr Amir Guindy, GP Wauchope
- Kate Chaffey, Registered Nurse, Clinic 33, Port Macquarie
- Nives Houlihan, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Clinic 33, Coffs Harbour
- Dr David Smith, Medical Director HIV & Sexual Health NNSW/MNC
- Dr Hafiz Talib, GP Coffs Harbour
