Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect older Australians from serious illness. However, residents in Residential Aged Care Homes (RACHs) can face challenges accessing recommended vaccines.
The VITAL study is trialling a new way to deliver National Immunisation Program vaccines to make vaccination easier, safer and more convenient for residents and families.
The study is led by Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) in partnership with Charles Sturt University (CSU) and Healthy North Coast.
What is the study looking at?
VITAL aims to:
- test a local health district–led vaccination model in RACHs
- collect feedback from residents, families, RACF staff and health professionals about vaccination experiences and preferences
- understand the practicalities and cost considerations of on-site vaccination clinics in RACHs.
Strong turnout for restrictive practices workshop
More than 100 aged care and health professionals joined Healthy North Coast’s Restrictive Practices Workshop on 27 May, delivered in Maclean and online by Loren De Vries (Assistant Commissioner for Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support from the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission) and Dr Des Graham (Chief Medical Officer at Geriatric Care Australia.)
The highly practical session covered restrictive practices legislation, behaviour support plans, decision-making capacity, and common myths that can create confusion for providers.
Participants described the workshop as enlightening, practical and immediately applicable to their work, with almost all reporting increased confidence in understanding restrictive practices and developing behaviour support plans.
Presentation materials shared on the day are now available, with a webinar recording to be released shortly. If you’d like copies of the presentation shared, contact Jo Winwood at jwinwood@hnc.org.au

How can RACHs and staff get involved?
1. Share your experience (focus groups or interviews)
We want to hear from:
- RACH Staff, Residents and Families – host a focus group at your facility
- Healthcare professionals – Book a one-on-one interview at a time that suits you with Associate Professor Pauletta Irwin on 02 5534 1522 or email pirwin@csu.edu.au.
Your insights will help improve vaccination delivery in aged care.
2. Vaccination Clinics – Free vaccines at your facility
MNCLHD will coordinate free, on‑site vaccination clinics at participating RACFs using Australian Government–recommended vaccines.
