TheĀ planned rollout for vaccinations by the Commonwealth will start with residential aged care facilities (RACFs) in Phase 1a and the community sector in Phase 1b. All aged care staff will be vaccinated in Phase 1a.
TheĀ Department of Health’s vaccination website has been updated and outlines the following for the aged care sector:
Residential aged care
- Residential aged care residents will be vaccinated in Phase 1A.
- Distribution will be through regional hubs. Vaccination teams will go out to aged care facilities. It is expected that Sydney metro will be done first before regional areas.
Community sector
- Older people living at home will be vaccinated in Phase 1B.
In a recent webinar held by Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA), the following was outlined:
- The Commonwealth are commissioning in-reach services to provide RACF residents and staff vaccinations.
- Discussions are underway regarding:
- Vaccinations for staff being mandatory or not. The sector peaks are leaning towards mandatory, however this is still under discussion with the Australian Government and other key stakeholders.
- The influenza vaccination rollout as part of the planning for COVID-19 vaccination program, e.g. how long after, is it safe for an older person, will the in-reach service also provide this?
- Staff and/or residents who arrive after the main rollout.
- Visitors, volunteers and contractors requiring vaccinations.
- Time for communication with guardians and consent is being considered in planning.
