Supporting older people who experience mental health challenges is part of everyday life in residential aged care. It can often be complex, with staff balancing compassionate, person-centred care alongside the need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved.
To support staff in this important work, Northern NSW Local Health District Older Person’s Mental Health Services and Healthy North Coast have partnered to deliver a monthly education program focused on older people’s mental health issues for residential aged care staff across the region.
Led by Professor David Burke (Clinical Director, Older People’s Mental Health, Northern NSW LHD), the monthly sessions explore a range of topics aimed at building understanding and confidence in recognising and responding to mental health concerns in residents.
Each session also provides time for questions, discussion and shared experiences.
Topics covered to date include:
- Recognising and responding to common signs and symptoms of mental health issues
- Depression in aged care residents – how you can make an impact
- Confusion, delusions and hallucinations in aged care residents
Professor Burke helps unpack common myths surrounding mental health, highlights early signs to look out for, particularly in residents who may be quiet or withdrawn and discusses medication considerations and potential side effects for specific conditions.
The sessions offer options to join both face to face or online and are open to all staff who have direct contact with residents, including care staff, registered nurses, facility managers, and support staff such as cleaners, kitchen and maintenance teams.
Next session:
How Lifestyle Factors Influence Residents Mental Health on Wednesday 3 June 2026, 2:00pm – 3:15pm.
Hosted by Grafton Aged Care, 12 Bent Street Grafton. Attendees invited to stay for afternoon tea.
Join us online or face to face for the fourth session in this series.
