Our region has been impacted by a number of recent natural disasters including floods, bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following disasters, it is common for people to experience psychological distress. A small number of people will also develop long-term mental health conditions as a result of these experiences.
GPs are often the first point of contact for people experiencing physical or emotional distress following a disaster.
There are a range of resources available to help GPs and other health practitioners understand the impact of disasters and support people experiencing trauma.
Free mental health information and referral to local services is available through Connect to Wellbeing. Phone 1300 160 339. People who have been impacted by disasters can access:
- Up to 10 free counselling sessions with a mental health professional, available in person or over the phone.
- Up to 10 free telehealth sessions using a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Resources for GPs supporting individuals and communities in disaster recovery are available at Phoenix Australia’s Mental Health Disaster Hub.
Self-care resources are available via Beyond Blue and the Centre for Rural and Remote Mental Health.
Free training is available for health practitioners who would like to enhance their skills and knowledge to support individuals during and after disasters. Please contact your Primary Health or Aboriginal Health Coordinator if you would like more information.
