When Murwillumbah farmer Neil Baker began planning his third annual BBQ for local farmers, he had more than good food and conversation in mind. After experiencing a stroke 18 months ago, Neil knew firsthand the importance of heart health, and wanted to use the gathering as an opportunity to raise awareness among his peers.
Neil reached out to Healthy North Coast to see if a nurse could attend the event to check blood pressure and chat to farmers about their heart health. With Queen Street Medical Centre currently running a nurse-led cardiovascular health program, we got in touch, and their nurse Christy Notley was quick to put her hand up.
On the day, Christy took the blood pressure of around 40 attendees and had meaningful conversations with many about heart health. She shared simple lifestyle changes that could make a big difference – like managing stress, staying active, and improving nutrition. Christy also handed out easy-to-read resources for farmers to take home.
Queen Street Medical Centre is part of APNA’s Building Nurse Capacity program, co-sponsored by Healthy North Coast. They’ve chosen to focus on cardiovascular health – a decision that’s already having a positive impact in the community.
