For the second time, the Cancer Council has funded Putting Out the Fires – a social marketing campaign aimed at reducing tobacco use in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Rivers.
Putting Out the Fires is a joint project with partners from the Northern NSW Local Health District, North Coast Primary Health Network, Bulgarr Ngaru Aboriginal Medical Corporation, Solid Mob, OTCP Disability Service, Country Rugby League and others.
Last year the Putting Out the Fires project supported eight teams of women to enter the Koori Knockout for the first time. Key anti-smoking messages created by each team were put onto uniforms. These messages are now being designed into posters and banners for public display in towns and Aboriginal communities.
These banners and posters, together with new Facebook and Instagram pages, will work to keep these important anti-smoking stories and messages alive.
This year, funding will allow women over 17 years to play in the Koori Knockout for the second time. Once again, anti-tobacco messages will be attached to uniforms and all those taking part in the Knockout will be able to join Solid Mob’s Juhm Buster program to help give up smoking. This year the project will extend to the environment with the sports ground also being smoke-free.
Last year there was a record attendance at the Koori Knockout and Country Rugby League matches. It’s believed this is because of women’s teams entering the competitions for the first time. This year we hope to have an even bigger crowd helping to send the message to people that smoking is unhealthy and there is help available to give it up.
