Personal experience as the stressed-out owner of a rapidly growing general practice in a new suburb of Newcastle, palliative care VMO and newly separated co-parent of two preschool children, led George to realise that men needed something akin to the women’s health movement, especially in the area of emotional wellbeing. Thus in the 1990s he became a pioneer of the emerging men’s health movement, founding president of the NSW Men’s Health and Wellbeing Association and a foundation Fellow of the Australian College (now Society) of Psychological Medicine.
For over 20 years, his practice has been exclusively devoted to counselling and psychotherapy for men, teenage boys and their families. Practicing in Sydney for the first ten years, he moved in 2006 to a large Clarence River property for a tree change and a dramatically different practice demographic in Grafton. Downsizing meant relocating his practice to Woolgoolga in late 2016.
As an FRACGP with an unusually diverse background ranging through dentistry in the navy and remote NT Aboriginal communities, a masters degree in community medicine (thesis on services for multiply handicapped adolescents), authorship of iconic textbooks of histology, histopathology and surgery, and facilitator of emotional intelligence courses for Qantas pilots and Vietnam veterans, he offers a unique service for men and teenage boys in emotional crisis.
Presenting issues include:
Referrals are welcome from GPs and other agencies. As a GP, George can write Mental Health Treatment plans if required and undertake up to ten focussed psychological strategy sessions in any calendar year. If required, further sessions can be provided as GP extended consultations.
Patients with Health Care Cards are bulk billed. All medication and physical health issues are referred back to the patient’s own regular GP. New patients will usually be seen within two weeks.
