Sexual dysfunction is common, yet it remains an under-discussed area of health care. Concerns about sexual wellbeing can significantly affect quality of life, relationships, mental health, and overall wellbeing.
To support clinicians across the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW in providing evidence-based, patient-centred care, a new Sexual Dysfunction Pathway has been developed in collaboration with local subject matter experts, including Specialist GP and Sex and Relationship Therapist, Ashlea Broomfield.
“This pathway provides GPs with a practical and comprehensive approach to addressing sexual functioning with their patients.”
– Ashlea Broomfield, Specialist GP and Sex and Relationship Therapist
The pathway covers common presentations including low libido, erectile dysfunction, arousal difficulties, orgasm disorders, and pain during sexual activity, while highlighting important red flags.
Adopting a holistic approach, the pathway encourages clinicians to consider the biological, psychological, relationship and sociocultural factors that may contribute to sexual dysfunction. It includes practical guidance on taking a sensitive sexual history, examination, appropriate investigations, medication review, lifestyle interventions, and up-to-date, evidence-based treatment options.
The pathway also provides referral guidance to local specialist services, including urology, gynaecology, endocrinology, pelvic floor physiotherapy, psychology, and sex therapy.
For many people, sexual wellbeing is an important component of overall health at every stage of life. By providing a structured, practical approach to assessment and management, this new pathway aims to increase clinician confidence, support earlier intervention, and improve outcomes for patients experiencing sexual dysfunction.
