A new HealthPathway – Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) Follow-up – has been established for women who may be experiencing complications after terminating a pregnancy.
HealthPathways Clinical Editor Dr Kate Allan said the pathway was developed in response to a need in the community. Local general practitioners and gynaecologists contributed to developing the pathway in during a consultation process in 2021.
‘It can be hard for women on the Mid North Coast and in Northern NSW to access services for termination of pregnancy,’ Dr Allan said.
‘This pathway is to assist GPs who might be seeing women after they’ve had a medical or a surgical termination and have experienced complications.
‘It will help guide GPs through that particular consultation and also links to updated referral processes in the Mid North Coast and Northern NSW local health districts.’
She said the pathway contains clear guidelines as to when patients should be referred to if they are experiencing complications.
‘It contains good information about symptoms and signs to look out for that may necessitate a prompt referral,’ Dr Allan said.
