The Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD) would like to notify GPs and pharmacies that NNSWLHD facilities are only supplying the new formulation of phenytoin capsules.
In August 2018, NNSWLHD received communications from Pfizer and NSW Health about new formulations of phenytoin capsules. Patients were coming into NNSWLHD facilities with the new formulation, so NNSWLHD decided to take a unified action in removing all old formulations in all facilities across the Health District (spanning from the Tweed Hospital to Grafton Hospital).
This means that any patients being admitted to any NNSWLHD facilities will only be supplied with the new formulation to avoid fluctuations of plasma phenytoin levels resulting from different formulation products.
NNSWLHD is aware that there are no old stocks available from wholesalers, however it is possible that old formulation stock may still be available in certain pharmacies and patients’ homes.
NNSWLHD urge prescribers to write “new formulations” on phenytoin scripts in the interim and also check phenytoin level 7 to 10 days after commencement of switching to new formulation products as advised by the manufacturer.
