People needing mental health support can now receive counselling by phone or ‘telepsychology’. Telepsychology sessions use a smartphone, tablet or computer.
Temporary MBS item numbers for these telehealth services are available until 30 September 2020. Telehealth reduces the risk of COVID-19 transmission and protects patients and health care providers. The item numbers are general and not limited to mental health issues related to COVID-19. Geographic restrictions do not apply.
New patients accessing services from psychologists, mental health social workers or occupational therapists need a GP referral and a mental health plan. Existing patients can continue their care under the temporary MBS telehealth item numbers. The limit of 10 face-to-face or telehealth sessions per calendar year applies.
GPs can refer people requiring mental health support to Connect to Wellbeing (CTW). CTW will direct them to the information or service that best suits their needs. Services include:
- NewAccess – free early intervention mental health coaching. Up to six sessions for people aged 16 years and over. A mental health plan is not required.
- Psychological Therapy Services – free counselling program. Up to 10 sessions with a mental health professional. Sessions take place via phone or telepsychology. Financially disadvantaged and vulnerable people with a moderate mental health condition are eligible. They need a GP referral and mental health plan.
GPs can also refer directly to Medicare-registered mental health professionals. Services provided under the temporary MBS telehealth items are bulk-billed for Commonwealth concession card holders, children aged under 16, and patients who are more vulnerable to COVID-19. For everyone else, bulk billing is at the discretion of the provider. Gap fees may apply.
