MEDIA RELEASE – DISTRIBUTED 3 APRIL 2020
This week, there has been a rise in the number of people calling their GP to get a flu shot. While it is great that people want to take precautions, Healthy North Coast is reminding local residents that the flu vaccine may not be here yet.
Healthy North Coast CEO Julie Sturgess says the current physical distancing we are doing is already helping to protect us from the spread of flu. Flu vaccine deliveries should start to arrive in our region this month.
“While people are staying home, the risk of flu infection is already minimised. Flu vaccines are currently being delivered across the country, but the exact timing of delivery to individual practices and pharmacies is unknown,” Ms Sturgess says.
Flu vaccines often get delivered in batches, so prioritising those who are most at risk is normal. This includes older people who can get a special over-65s flu vaccine.
“We know that GPs are already reporting long waiting lists for patients eager to get their flu shot,” Ms Sturgess says.
“Your GP will let you know when your flu shot appointments become available. Until then, people should keep up their good respiratory hygiene at home.”
If you want to get a flu shot this season, call your GP to make an appointment. Please be mindful that it may not happen straight away. You will be able to get vaccinated when appointments are available.
Until then, stay home, wash your hands and sneeze or cough into your elbow.
