The Australian Government’s Department of Health and Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment have released a health professionals kit with information about the current Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) outbreak, including recent major announcements.
JEV has been detected in humans and piggeries in parts of southern and eastern Australia, and is a mosquito-borne flavivirus in the same genus as dengue, yellow fever, Murray Valley encephalitis and West Nile viruses.
This is a notifiable disease spread through mosquito bites and this outbreak has been declared a Communicable Disease Incident of National Significance.
