The peak season for meningococcal disease is winter and spring.
General practitioners and other immunisation providers need to be aware of the symptoms of meningococcal disease, the need for immediate treatment and, where possible, ensure that patients at risk of meningococcal disease are offered protection through immunisation.
Meningococcal vaccine factsheets and frequently asked questions about meningococcal disease can be found on the NCIRS website and the Department of Health website.
GPs and other immunisation providers are encouraged to be aware of the national, state and territory meningococcal immunisation programs currently available as some of the funded meningococcal immunisation programs are time limited. More information about the state and territory meningococcal programs can be accessed through the Department of Health website.
