Haemochromatosis is the most common genetic disorder in Australia, with around 1 in 200 people living with the disease.
Causing an overload of iron in the body, it is a debilitating condition, and can be fatal.
There is an unexpected benefit for others in the form of regular blood donations – and a High Ferritin app to help doctors manage their patients.
By regularly donating blood, many patients are able to help keep their iron levels down.
Created by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, the High Ferritin app is a web-based tool that determines the eligibility of patients, as well as providing education.
The algorithm in the app was developed in consultation with Professor John Olynyk, an expert in the field of iron disorders, and has been approved by the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and the Haematology Society of Australia and New Zealand, and is endorsed by Haemochromatosis Australia.
With 32,000 blood donations needed every week, the Australian Red Cross encourages GPs to send their patients to Lifeblood for therapeutic venesection, so that their blood can help keep Australia’s blood supply strong.
To become a therapeutic donor with Lifeblood, a patient needs an online referral form from their GP via the High Ferritin app.
The doctor enters the patient’s HFE genetics and ferritin levels into the High Ferritin app. An algorithm then determines whether the patient may be eligible for therapeutic venesection.
Lifeblood has set up a specific donation team for Haemochromatosis Australia, where every donation is tracked and counts towards an annual tally of lives saved.
Having therapeutic venesection at Lifeblood may also help normalise the condition for donors as they realise there are many people with a similar condition in the region and indeed across the country.
Please help the Australian Red Cross donor centres save more lives today and send your patients to Lifeblood for their venesection.
