For individuals struggling with cognitive decline or wanting help to improve cognitive function as they age, Currumbin Clinic’s Brain Gym day program focuses on issues related to managing cognitive function. This includes brain training exercises and creating a healthy balanced lifestyle through mental and physical activities, healthy eating and social activities.
Brain training for older adults, does it actually work?
Historically, people have used several games — from Sudoku to crosswords — to boost their cognitive abilities, from dedicated brain training programs or apps that promise to boost memory, attention span and more, with the goal to keep the mind mentally sharp no matter what age.
Much like the body, keeping the brain active is important at all stages of life. Brain training aims to serve as mental exercise that has the potential to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive decline. Brain training can provide a simple way to improve memory and problem-solving skills.
Many studies have been carried out to evaluate the efficacy of cognitive training. Evidence suggests that 12 or more weeks of cognitive training may improve cognition in older adults.
Currumbin Clinic Psychologist Anne-Marie Elias says, ‘Engaging in brain training activities can help to significantly reduce and slow down the negative mental effects brought on by old age.
‘For older people, brain training should be conducted as much as possible to get maximum benefits.’.
Currumbin Clinic’s Brain Gym day program is designed for people over 50 years of age who may be experiencing adjustment difficulties, depression, anxiety from early signs of memory loss and/or cognitive changes.
