When Nick, a 41 year old army veteran who now lives in the Mid North Coast first retired from the army, he didn’t know very much about the health services and supports available to veterans and their families.
“I was aware of the white card, which funds treatment for injuries related to service, but that was about it” Nick said.
More than 10 years later, Nick is still learning about some of the supports available to veterans.
“There are lots of services available, but the information about them isn’t always easy to find” Nick reflects. “It would be great if doctors who see veterans are aware of what is out there so they can provide this information when it is needed”.
This is one of the ways the Mid and North Coast HealthPathways team is hoping to help improve health outcomes for veterans living on the Mid and North Coast, with its recent localisation of five new HealthPathways Veteran Health pages:
- Veterans’ Health Assessment
- Veteran Care Practice Management
- Guide to DVA Compensation Claim Forms
- Veteran Referral and Support
- Defence and Veteran Family Support
Originally developed by the Townsville HealthPathways team in collaboration with the Australian Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the pathways are designed to help clinicians assess the specific health needs of veterans. Some veterans are at increased risk of a range of physical and mental health conditions due to occupational exposures and deployment during their time of service.
The pathways include information about how to navigate a range of services and programs available to veterans; from claims related to occupational chemical exposures to subsidised treatment for cancer and tuberculosis, and mental health supports, including for spouse and children who may be impacted by the veteran’s transition to civilian life.
Detailed guidance about DVA billing is also provided.
